Fall in inflation will be slower than the MPC predicted 
  • Annual CPI inflation down from 3.6% in January to 3.4% in February
  • Annual RPI inflation down from 3.9% in January to 3.7% in February
Commenting on the inflation figures for February 2012, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
 
“Although a fall in inflation was unsurprising, it was not as rapid as most analysts expected and we shouldn’t be unduly optimistic about future trends."

Credit easing is not a panacea 
Commenting on the Chancellor’s announcement of the details of the National Loan Guarantee Scheme, John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said:
 
“The current economic challenges mean that the government must look at new and innovative ways of providing credit to viable firms. While credit easing is a step in the right direction, it is not a panacea for all the problems faced by businesses trying to access finance."

In this week’s budget, the government should also be more radical, and devote additional resources to the Youth Contract to help small and medium-sized businesses with the up-front costs of taking on young people.”
