In conjunction with The Business Library (in the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library at The Forum), the Chamber is pleased to bring you the headlines from the EDP Wednesday Business Supplement.
 
Main paper:

Norfolk on hold (p.1)
Central government cutbacks could affect projects in Norfolk, creating a ‘domino effect’ particularly impacting local jobs. The government will detail where the cuts will fall in the government spending review in the Autumn.
 
The Business:

Taking stock (p.1) & It’s got them on the list…(p.7)
Norfolk’s first stock market listing in nearly three years could take place next year. Holt-based Morston Assets, a property company has been behind much of the development of King’s Lynn. Morston wants to list on the stock market to raise cash to buy more suitable development sites with potential over five to ten years.
 
Pier attracts a lot of inquiries after going on the market (p.2)
Agents handling the sale of Southwold pier say they have had multiple enquiries. Full sale particulars are being circulated this week by Christie and Co. The property is on the market for £6m.
 
Business is hit by materials shortage (p.2)
The Light Aircraft Company is unable to keep up with demand for their kit planes because of a shortage of parts caused by destocking by UK suppliers. The company is based at Little Snoring airfield near Fakenham and has received orders for 12 microlights and Category A planes. The company is one of only three kit plane manufacturers in the country.
 
Investment helps to boost recovery (p.3)
The air-conditioning specialist, Trox UK, based in Thetford, has undergone a restructuring programme and investment in new machinery and staff. The company is looking at locations in London, Scotland and Manchester for new offices, to re-establish a regional sales network.
 
More planes may mean more routes (p.4)
A multi-billion-pound investment in new planes could mean new routes from Norwich International airport, according to Flybe, which is the main operator of flights from Norwich.
 
Firm goes all out to generate business (p.5)
The Attleborough-based pump and generator supplier Stuart Group is seeking further expansion after acquiring the assets of a former rival. The company bought the assets and order book of Power4 earlier in the year. The company has won a series of new contracts recently.
 
Let’s leap at this LEP chance, says Choose Suffolk (p.5)
Choose Suffolk is looking to become the lead player in the race to form the county’s replacement for the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), which is to be disbanded under government budget cuts. Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) will replace existing regional development agencies.
 
Shhh! It’s for your eyes only…(p.5)
Later this year Virgin Money will launch a top-secret new product. The views and advice of business undergraduates at Ashcroft International Business School at Anglia Ruskin University have been sought on the product. The students were required to sign non-disclosure forms.
 
Beet ‘can compete with cane’ (p.5)
Beet growers in Europe can compete with cut-price competition from cane. This was the message at a world sugar conference held at Cambridge. There will be a full conference report in the EDP this week.
 
Budget cut jitters mean office space goes begging (p.5)
Demand for office space in the region has fallen in the last quarter, due to uncertainty about government budget cuts. A survey was conducted by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
 
Confidence worsening (p.6)
The government has been urged to do more to help firms recover from the recession after new research revealed that business confidence has worsened in recent months.
 
Construction firm remodels business (p.6)
Norwich-based Pentaco Construction is in line to grow its way out of the recession. The business was remodelled just as the country went into recession, but now needs to move premises and is looking to increase turnover. The company has changed focus and also picked up new clients in different geographical areas.
